Hamer Steps Back Into Spotlight

Written by: Matthew Sokol – Campbell blog contributor

You might have noticed a familiar face back on the basketball court a week ago for the Campbell men’s basketball team.

That familiar face is senior guard Kyre’ Hamer, who had missed the last five games due to injury. Hamer contributed 9.3 points per game and four boards last weekend as Campbell went 2-1 over the Holy City Hoop Classic in Charleston, S.C.

The Stone Mountain, Ga. native is averaging 8.3 points per game over his Campbell career, and has shot 48.5 percent from the field. His overall presence will certainly be felt over the next couple of games as Hamer gets back into the offensive and defensive flow.

After getting knocked out of the season opener at Oklahoma State, Hamer had the opportunity to watch the younger Camels perform. His senior leadership will be felt again by the whole team, but the youth stepped up during the absence of their senior captain.

“The younger players would look to me for advice on what they can do, and I would say just play your game,” said Hamer. “I would say play together, and if everybody is playing together, my absence won’t show. When I came back we just jelled, and it made it a lot easier to play.”

Hamer is exciting about being back out on the court, and he knows that his presence will add to an already growing roster. Many of the younger players had the opportunities to fill the role that Hamer had previously occupied, but the senior guard is ready to take charge again preparing to guide his team into Big South Conference play.

“Senior leadership is very important because the younger guys look up to the older ones because they have the experience,” said Hamer.

“If the seniors are doing their job holding their leadership up, then I think the team will follow; you will continue to win and build as a team. I am working on being more aggressive offensively and defensively as well.”

Exams finish up for students on Dec. 12 and that means Campbell Basketball returns to the floor this week as Hamer makes his first home start since his injury as the Fighting Camels take on UNC Wilmington this Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7:00 p.m.
