The Houston Astros announced on Friday that the Carolina League Buies Creek Astros will be playing their home games at Jim Perry Stadium.
The new minor league team will be the temporary Astros Class A Advanced affiliate for the 2017-18 seasons, playing 70 home games per season right here in Buies Creek. Many new additions have been in the making at the baseball stadium as the Houston Astros will be supplying and putting in new synthetic turf at Jim Perry Stadium.
“This is an unexpected and exciting development,” said Campbell University President J. Bradley Creed. “We are glad that we are able to work with the Houston Astros organization in a way that benefits both the Houston Astros and Campbell University.”
The Houston Astros President of Business Operations Reid Ryan is excited over the relationship that is developing between the Houston Astros and Campbell University Athletics. Ryan is actively working to market the Fighting Camels brand for years to come.
“We want to raise Campbell’s profile nationally,” said Ryan. “We think the good thing that the Houston Astros being here is that they are going to get a new field.”
“A lot of people around the country are going to realize that Campbell has Division I baseball. We want to have a long-term partnership with Campbell, and once we open the facility in Fayetteville, we would like to try to get them to host a Division I tournament.”
The Buies Creek Astros will start the 2017 season at Jim Perry Stadium when they play the Salem Red Sox on Thursday, April 6.
