Former Campbell Baseball pitcher Jake Smith will become the second-ever Fighting Camels player to pitch in Major League Baseball as the San Diego Padres have brought him up to the MLB level under the expanded 40-man roster.

Smith pitched in 22 games for the San Francisco Giants Double-A affiliate Richmond before getting the call to the next level, joining fellow Camel Matt Marksberry (Atlanta Braves) in Major League Baseball.
Both Smith and Marksberry pitched for the Camels over the best four-year run in program history, averaging 40 wins per game while clinching the regular season Big South title (2013) and NCAA Tournament berth (2014) in consecutive 40-plus win seasons.
